quote of the class

“Wall Street is driven by greed and fear…(pause) and lust.” – Professor H.

Grace made 떡볶이 for the first time in her life. It wasn’t a planned thing but she realized the ingredients she had in her fridge (onions, green onions, dduk (rice cakes), and odeng (fish cakes)) would be perfect for the dish! In high school, she always referred to recipes when she cooked but college life started giving her some kind of unexplainable confidence…one that makes her think, “I’ve seen my mom do it before, I don’t need no recipe.” And so this is her masterpiece based on solely memories of her mom cooking the dish! To my surprise, it was quite tasty! With all this cooking Grace has been doing lately, I gained 20 grams! Maybe I should starting running with her….

my recent biggest fear…

Recently, I have been running quite a bit in order to train for the LA marathon. More than anything, this is my biggest FEAR from the training:

MONSTER CALVES!!!

God, I’m learning so much about You and about the life you have called Your children to from runnig. But please do not let me end up with monster calves by the end of my training. I want to be able to wear cute skirts and shorts without scaring people off when I walk up the stairs. Thanks.

do we look alike?

Recently, a lot of people have been telling me (in Korea and in the States) that i look like these two Korean celebrities. Would you agree?

1. 황한나 from the movie 국가대표. Some 집사님’s at church told me that when they were watching the movie and their initial reaction when 황하나 appeared on the screen was, “OH! Isn’t that Grace?” Apart from similar looks she speaks English as a Korean American in the movie and so I think that may be another reason why they thought of me. But anyways, this is her:

2. 남지현 from the Korean girl pop group 4min(포미닛). She’s actually two years younger than me so she must look like me. : ) I think I would complete the look if I put on fake eyelashes and wear a lot of smoky-eye make up. haha. Anyways, my two classmates from my Korean class strongly insists that I look exactly like her, especially my profile.

p.s. I just wanted to write a  fun post, and not in any way underscore my narcissism by saying that I think I actually look like them or as pretty as them! so don’t hate!

I don’t know why I love this song so much, especially the acoustic version. But I seriously listened to it over 50 times this week…

small things

As many of you know, I am a Global Studies major. Just in case you’re not familiar with the major, let me give you a basic idea of what we study: “The Global Studies Interdepartmental Program (IDP) provides UCLA undergraduates with a rigorous interdisciplinary education in the principal issues confronting today’s globalized world as well its historical antecedents in three thematic pillars (Conflict and Governance, Markets, Culture and Society.” My friend who is an I.D.S. major likes to put it this way: ” IDS students study about poor countries and how to save them while GS students study about rich countries and how to make them more rich.” Not true! We study about development of developing countries as well…

Anyways, the point I’m trying to make is that my fellow Global Studies students (only 70 per year), including myself, have a tendency to be not only very global-minded but IDEALISTIC…we are always (or seem to be) concerned with what changes we or others could make to make the world a better place. We want to stop world hunger, world poverty, world illiteracy, you name it, we want to fix everything and create a Utopia for everyone.

Because GS classes tend to focus on the bigger picture, the overall policies, the people in power, I get the impression that GS students feel like they can’t make a difference unless they grow up and become important people. Well, I often get the mis-conception that I can’t really make a difference and really start  ”helping the world” unless I go into the U.N. and take over Ban Ki Moon’s position as Secretary-General (secret desire). When I talk to GS students, many are very ambitious and want to become lawyers, diplomats, etc. and I am believe that many of them will, in the future, impact the world in significant ways.

But as for now, I am not the Secretary-General of the UN and my friends are not lawyers or diplomats…we are college students. We must think of ways we can make a difference with the resources and influence we have right now. Instead of always fantasizing or dreaming of what I COULD do, I must start practicing ACTION. One of the ways I have been making a difference is by supporting a child from World Vision. I might not be doing much in terms of  global poverty, but I am helping Manyara (my child’s name who has the same birthday as me!!!) receive food and a proper education. I am making a DIFFERENCE to someone!

$35 a month…its not a small amount to a college student but its not a large amount either. It’s a dinner at a nice restaurant, 7 frappaccinos, a nice shirt…you get the idea. So join me in starting this habit of making a difference in the little things. For Jesus said, “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.” -Matthew 25: 21-

Pray for Haiti

i live to know You and make You known all the days of my life

even in the midst of suffering, i will worship You

and i will bodly declare Your faithfulness and goodness to the ends of the earth

for You collect my tears in heaven

and You know me by name

You give me water that makes me never thirst again

so help me to not be offended, but to stand firm and remain faithful through it all
